DIY bed bug control

How NOT to get rid of bed bugs

The first and most common way that people make their bed bug infestation worse is by using a fogger or "bug bomb". Every week we deal with a bed bug infestation that has been made worse due to the use of this type of product.

"pyrethroid aerosols and foggers will not eradicate a bed bug infestation please do not use them it will only make your infestation more difficult to control".

Foggers are ineffective at killing crawling insects particularly bed bugs as they are likely to be hiding deep within cracks and crevices. Pyrethroids are also repellent to insects meaning the bed bugs will be driven deeper into the cracks and crevices or even into other rooms.

Other ways to not kill bed bugs include fitting a mattress encasement. Bed bugs don't live inside the mattress. In an advanced infestation one or two bed bugs may be found on mattress edges but they are too large to get inside the mattress unless its ripped and torn.

Finally do not simply drag your mattress through the house and dump it outside as you may deposit bed bugs in other rooms. If you must dispose of the mattress before the infestation is controlled wrap the mattress in plastic before moving it from the affected room.
